The battle was fought between the British East India Company and the Nawab of Bengal. The Nawab was the local ruler of a large and wealthy area. This victory changed how much power the British had in India. It helped them gain control over much of the land for a long time.

The battle happened because of many disagreements between leaders. Siraj-ud-Daulah was the last independent Nawab of Bengal. He took over after his grandfather, Alivardi Khan, died in 1756.

The Nawab was suspicious of the British companies. He ordered them to stop building new walls and forts. Tensions grew even higher after an attack on the British city of Calcutta.

This led to a big struggle for power in the region.

Robert Clive led the British forces during the fight. He was a colonel who wanted to win back control of Calcutta.

The Nawab had a much larger army than the British. He had about 50,000 soldiers to use. He also had 40 cannons and 10 war elephants.

The British army was much smaller with only 3,000 soldiers. Clive knew he could not win by strength alone.

Clive used a secret plan to win the battle. He made a deal with Mir Jafar, who was the commander in the Nawab's army.

Clive promised to make Mir Jafar the new Nawab. During the battle, Mir Jafar and other leaders did not join the fight. They kept their troops near the field but stayed still. Because of this inactivity, the Nawab's army was defeated. The whole battle lasted about 11 hours.

This event changed the future of the Indian subcontinent. The British East India Company gained a lot of wealth and influence. They used this money to build a much stronger military. Over the next hundred years, they expanded their control into many other lands. They eventually pushed out other European powers like the French and the Dutch. This battle was a key step in building the British Empire in South Asia.
