The Durrani Empire was a very large and powerful land.

It is often called the Kingdom of Afghanistan. This empire was important because it helped shape the modern country of Afghanistan. At its peak, it ruled many places in Central Asia. It also held parts of the Iranian plateau and the Indian subcontinent. It was one of the most significant Islamic empires of the late 1700s.

Building the empire took many steps and many leaders. It began when a grand council called a loya jirga met in 1747.

Two men wanted to lead the Afghan people. A holy man named Mohammad Sabir Khan helped choose Ahmad Shah Durrani. He put wheat or barley in Ahmad's turban to crown him. Ahmad then changed his tribal name from Abdali to Durrani. He worked hard to win control of many important cities. He took cities like Kandahar, Ghazni, Kabul, and Peshawar.

Ahmad Shah Durrani was the founder of this great dynasty. He was the son of Muhammad Zaman Khan. His father had been a governor in Herat. Ahmad was also a commander for Nader Shah Afshar. After Nader Shah died in June 1747, Ahmad became the leader. He led many armies to expand his borders. He even invaded India eight different times. In 1757, his forces reached the city of Delhi. He let the Mughal emperor stay in charge if he followed Afghan rules.

The empire also reached out to far away places like China. In 1763, Ahmad sent an embassy to the Qing dynasty.

A man named Khwaja Mirhan led this group. They traveled a very long path to reach Beijing. They brought gifts like four horses for the Qing emperor. This meeting was important for how different empires saw each other.

Timur moved the capital city to Kabul. Peshawar became the capital during the winter months. Over time, the empire began to lose its land. The Sikh Empire took some areas in the early 1800s. Later, a new group called the Barakzai dynasty took over. Even so, people still call Ahmad the Father of the Nation. His work created the foundation for the nation we know today.
