He was born into the Abdali tribe of Pashtuns. His birth happened between the years 1720 and 1722. Some say he was born in Herat, while others think he was born in Multan. After he became king, he changed his tribe's name to Durrani. People often call him Ahmad Shah Baba, which means "Ahmad Shah the Father."

His early life was full of big changes. He spent many years serving a ruler named Nader Shah. Ahmad Shah was a brave officer in the military. He even led a group of 3,000 to 4,000 tribesmen. In 1747, Nader Shah was killed by a group of people. This event caused the old empire to break apart. Ahmad Shah used this time to build his own power. He moved toward the city of Kandahar to start his rule.

Becoming king was a very important step for him. He was crowned near Kandahar in 1747. Some stories say a council of tribal leaders chose him. Other historians say a military council brought him to power. He had to make deals with other strong leaders to stay in control. One leader, Jamal Khan, agreed to serve him as a wazir. To show he was king, a piece of greenery was attached to his cap.

Running a huge empire was a very hard job. He used a style of government similar to the Mughals. He had a tribal council to help him make decisions. However, his empire had many different groups of people. This sometimes caused tension between different tribes. The constant fighting and traveling also made him very tired. He died in 1772 in a place called Maruf. He was buried in a special tomb in Kandahar.
