Born into the Abdali tribe of Pashtuns between 1720 and 1722, he eventually changed his tribe's name to Durrani. He adopted the title Padishah, which means emperor. He also earned the epithet "Durr-i Durrân," meaning "Pearl of Pearls."

His leadership created one of the largest Islamic empires in the world.

His path to power began while serving the Iranian monarch Nader Shah. Ahmad Shah was a skilled officer in the Afsharid military. He likely commanded a regiment of 3,000 to 4,000 Durrani tribesmen during Nader Shah's invasions. In 1747, Nader Shah was assassinated by conspirators in Quchan. This event caused the Afsharid Empire to fracture into different pieces. Ahmad Shah took advantage of this chaos to assert his own authority. He drove away Persian forces and moved toward Kandahar to consolidate his power.

Establishing his rule required both military force and political negotiation. Ahmad Shah first secured control over his own Durrani regiments. He also had to settle disputes with powerful local clans. For example, he reached an agreement with Jamal Khan of the Barakzai tribe. Jamal Khan agreed to submit to Ahmad Shah as king. In exchange, Ahmad Shah made Jamal Khan and his descendants wazir, or high-ranking ministers.

His rise to power is often described by scholars as a military coup.

As a ruler, Ahmad Shah was a relentless military tactician. He led over fifteen major military campaigns during his twenty-five-year reign. Nine of these campaigns were centered in present-day India. Three occurred in Khorasan, and three took place in Afghan Turkestan.

He was famous for rarely losing a battle. Historians compare his brilliance to other great leaders like Mahmud of Ghazni and Nader Shah. He was often called the "greatest general of Asia of his time."

His military successes led to massive territorial expansion. Following his third invasion of India, he annexed Punjab and Kashmir from the Mughal Empire. During his fourth invasion in 1757, his forces occupied and sacked Delhi.

His fifth invasion included the Third Battle of Panipat. This was the largest battle of the 18th century. Through these victories, his empire encompassed Afghanistan, much of Pakistan, Iranian Khorasan, and parts of Northern India. His army even grew to include war elephants.

Managing such a vast empire presented significant administrative challenges. Ahmad Shah adopted an absolute monarchy similar to the Mughal and Safavid styles. He utilized a tribal council that functioned like a cabinet. However, he made these cabinet positions hereditary. This made it very difficult to remove advisors who were no longer effective. The civil service was largely run by the Qizilbash people because many Durrani elites were illiterate. This created ethnic tensions between the Qizilbash and the tribal council.

Economic policies also created friction within the empire. Ahmad Shah exempted his own Durrani tribe from paying taxes. He also sold the rights to collect revenue to the highest bidders. This practice allowed Durrani members to become very wealthy. However, it often forced other landholders into deep debt. Many of these people were forced to sell their lands or flee. These lands were often bought up by the very Durrani elites who had caused the bankruptcy.

After decades of nonstop campaigning, the physical toll on Ahmad Shah was great. Constant warfare and the stress of ruling eventually affected his health. He died in 1772 in a place called Maruf. He was buried in his own mausoleum located in Kandahar.
