How the Pallavas rose to power is still a big mystery. Historians have many different ideas about their origins. Some believe they once served the Satavahana Empire. They may have become independent after that empire fell. Other experts think they were native to the central Tamil plains.

Some even suggest they were descendants of a Chola prince. There are also theories about them being pastoralists. These different ideas show how much we are still learning.

Being a great power meant the Pallavas had many rivals. They often fought with the Chalukyas to their north. They also had conflicts with the Chola and Pandya kingdoms to the south.

At one time, they even fought against the Kalabhras. The Pallavas were very strong during the reigns of Mahendravarman I and Narasimhavarman I. These leaders helped the dynasty become a major force. They held onto their capital, Kanchipuram, for a very long time.

The Pallavas left behind amazing things for us to see today. They were great supporters of Hindu Vaishnava temple architecture. They built magnificent stone temples and sculptures.

One of their most famous works is the Shore Temple. This beautiful building is located in Mamallapuram. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They also created the Pallava script. This way of writing helped create many other scripts in Southeast Asia.

You can see the influence of the Pallavas in many places today. Their style of building helped start medieval southern Indian architecture. Some scholars think the ancient book Manasara inspired their work.
