At first, the Hoysala leaders were local chiefs. They served the Western Chalukyas of Kalyani. Over time, they grew much more powerful. They moved their capital from Belur to Halebidu. This kingdom became a famous center for art and trade.

One famous legend tells of a young man named Sala. He was in a forest at a place called Sosevur. While there, he saved his teacher, a Jain guru named Sudatta. Sala killed a tiger to save him.

This story is part of the Hoysala emblem. Some people say the name 'Hoy-sala' comes from the Old Kannada word 'hoy,' which means strike. While this is a lovely story, historians view it as folklore. Early records show the clan came from the Malnad hills. They were known as the 'Lords of the hills.'

King Vishnuvardhana was a very important ruler. He ruled around the year 1108. He fought many wars against the Chola people. His general, Gangaraja, led a great counter-attack. They won a big battle at Talakadu.

Because of this, Vishnuvardhana earned the title 'Conqueror of Talakadu.' These victories helped the Hoysalas become independent. Later, his grandson Veera Ballala II also made the kingdom very strong. He even took the title 'Emperor of the south' in 1217.

The Hoysala people were amazing builders. They built over 100 beautiful temples. These temples have very detailed stone carvings.

Three of these temples are very special today. They are the Chennakeshava Temple in Belur, the Hoysaleswara Temple in Halebidu, and the Chennakesava Temple in Somanathapura.

In 2023, these three sites became UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The kings also helped poets write in Kannada and Sanskrit. This made literature grow during their rule.

The kingdom grew wealthy through farming and trade. Farmers grew rice, corn, and spices in the river valleys. They also raised cattle in the cooler highlands.

Merchants traded goods like silk, gold, and sandalwood. They even traded with places as far away as China.

This trade brought much money to the state. The kings used this wealth to buy horses and elephants. Eventually, the kingdom faced many invasions from the north. After many years of fighting, the Hoysala lands joined a new empire called Vijayanagara.
