During the early years, the court used the Telugu language. Later, the Odia language became official as the empire grew north. The kings moved their capital cities several times. They moved from Dantapura to Kalinganagara and then to Kataka. Eventually, the capital moved to Paralakhemundi.

Historians believe the dynasty began when people moved from the west. Many experts think they were a branch of the Western Gangas. A leader named Kamarnava I is a very important figure. He left his home in the Gangawadi province of Karnataka. He traveled east with his four brothers to find a new home.

Historians call them "Eastern" Gangas to distinguish them from the Western Gangas of Karnataka. This dynasty is recognized as the longest-reigning dynasty in the history of Odisha.

The dynasty's rule is divided into three distinct historical phases. The first phase is the Early Eastern Gangas, lasting from 493 to 1077. This was followed by the Imperial Eastern Gangas from 1077 to 1436. The final phase consisted of the Khemundi Gangas, who ruled until 1947.

During the early period, the official court language was Telugu. As the empire expanded north, Odia became the official language. The capital cities also shifted over time. They moved from Dantapura to Kalinganagara, then to Kataka, and finally to Paralakhemundi.

Scholars believe the dynasty originated from the Western Gangas in Karnataka. Many historians suggest the founders were migrants from the Gangawadi province. A key figure in this migration was Kamarnava I. According to copper plate records, he left his home in Kolahalapura. He traveled east with four brothers to establish a new kingdom.

They reached the Mahendra mountain and settled in Kalinga. Kamarnava I defeated the local king, Sabaraditya, to secure the region. This event established the foundation for their long rule.

The dynasty's military history involved significant conflicts and expansions. Early leaders like Indravarman I rose to power through strategic warfare. Indravarman I led an alliance of small kingdoms against the Vishnukundina king. He later claimed the title Tri-Kalingadhipati, meaning lord of the three Kalingas. His son, Hastivarman, expanded these territories even further. He earned the title Sakala-Kalingadhipati, which means ruler of the whole Kalinga.

Later, Anantavarman Vajrahasta V challenged the Somavanshi Dynasty to increase his power.

Wealth from trade and commerce allowed the Gangas to build incredible monuments. They used their prosperity to fund massive religious structures. The most famous examples are the Jagannath Temple in Puri and the Konark Sun Temple.

Other notable sites include the Madhukeshwara temple and the Nrusinghanath Temple. These temples often used sophisticated architectural styles. Some researchers note that these styles show influences from the Badami Chalukya traditions of Karnataka.

Defense was a constant necessity for the kingdom's survival. The rulers had to protect their lands from frequent Muslim invasions.

To manage their economy, they used a specific currency called Ganga Fanams. This money was similar to the coins used by the Cholas and Eastern Chalukyas. The dynasty's political structure included various administrative centers. These included Kalinganagara, Svetaka Mandala, Giri Kalinga, Ambabadi Mandala, and Vartanni Mandala. These centers helped manage the diverse parts of the empire.

The legacy of the Eastern Gangas connects ancient migration to modern Indian history. Their rule ended in stages, transitioning from the main dynasty to the Khemundi Gangas. The Khemundi rule lasted until the abolition of the zamindari system in modern India.
