The empire rose because of many conflicts in the Deccan region. Before 1336, several Hindu states faced attacks from the north. These included the Yadava, Kakatiya, and Pandyan empires. Muslim armies from the Delhi Sultanate had defeated many of these groups. The Vijayanagara Empire formed as a way to protect southern powers. It acted as a successor to the prosperous kingdoms that came before it.

Two brothers founded the empire in 1336. Their names were Harihara I and Bukka Raya I. They belonged to the Sangama dynasty. Historians have two theories about where they came from. One theory says they were Kannadiga commanders from the Hoysala army. Another theory suggests they were Telugu people from the Kakatiya Kingdom. They moved their capital to the city of Vijayanagara. This location was easier to defend against northern armies.

Leadership changed through several different dynasties over time. The Sangama dynasty ruled first. Later, the Saluva dynasty took control through a coup. Eventually, the Tuluva dynasty began its rule in 1503. Each dynasty faced challenges from the Deccan sultanates. These sultanates were groups of Muslim states located to the north. The empire had to fight many wars to protect its borders.

The empire's power began to fade after a major defeat. In 1565, the Battle of Talikota changed everything. The combined armies of the Deccan sultanates defeated the empire.
