Kalinga was a very prosperous and peaceful place. The people there were very skilled at art. They even had a strong navy for sea trade. They used ships to travel to Southeast Asia. Some scholars say Kalinga was a threat to the Mauryas. It could have blocked trade or messages. The Mauryans wanted to control the coast of the Bay of Bengal.
