The Nanda Empire was a huge kingdom in northeastern India. It ruled over the Magadha region and the wide Gangetic plains. This powerful group of lands existed around the 4th century BCE.

Some ancient accounts even suggest they were around in the 5th century BCE. The Nandas built upon the work of leaders who came before them. They created a more centralized way to run their large lands. This meant the kings had more direct control over their many subjects.

To run such a big empire, the Nandas used smart systems. They introduced a new way to use money called a currency system. This helped them collect taxes from the people living in their lands.

Because of these taxes, the Nanda kings became very wealthy. However, many of their subjects were not happy with this. People thought the kings were unkind and charged too much money. These high taxes made the Nanda rulers quite unpopular.

The story of how the Nandas began is full of different tales. Many ancient traditions say the first king was of low birth. A Greek historian named Diodorus wrote that the king was the son of a barber. Other Jain texts also say the first king's mother was a courtesan. The Puranas name the founder as Mahapadma, but even they mention his low social class. One Buddhist story says the founder was a man named Ugrasena. He was once a leader of a gang of robbers before he took power.

We know the Nanda Empire was a massive military power. Greek writers described the kingdom as the land of the Gangaridai and the Prasii. Their capital city was called Pataliputra, which is near modern-day Patna.

When Alexander the Great invaded the Punjab region, he heard about this army. Greek sources say the Nanda army was five times larger than Alexander's army. Alexander's soldiers were very tired from fighting for many years. They did not want to fight such a huge force, so they stopped their campaign.

The Nanda rule eventually came to an end through a big change. The last Nanda king was a man named Dhana Nanda. He was overthrown by a leader named Chandragupta Maurya. This event led to the start of the famous Maurya Empire. The Nandas had helped shape the way large empires were run in India. Their wealth and strong armies set the stage for the great rulers who followed them.
