He was born in the capital city of Pella around 356 BC. His father was King Philip II, a strong leader who built a great army. Alexander grew up learning many skills like riding horses and hunting. One famous story tells of a wild horse named Bucephalas. The horse was afraid of its own shadow, but young Alexander tamed it.

His father saw his courage and said Macedon was too small for him.

To prepare him for leadership, Philip hired a famous thinker named Aristotle.

Aristotle taught Alexander about many things like medicine, art, and logic. Alexander also loved stories about heroes, especially the Iliad by Homer. He studied with other noble children who later became his trusted generals. These men were known as his "Companions." This education helped him become a very smart leader. He learned how to think deeply about the world around him.

Alexander became king in 336 BC when he was only 20 years old.
