The Battle of Gaugamela was a massive turning point in history. It took place in 331 BC near a village called Gaugamela. This area is in modern-day Iraq, north of Arbela. The battle was fought between two great leaders. Alexander the Great led the Army of Macedon. King Darius III led the Persian Army. This fight was the final blow to the Achaemenid Empire. After this battle, Alexander conquered the entire empire.

Before the fighting began, the two kings tried to talk. Darius III wanted to avoid another war. He sent several offers to Alexander to find peace. First, he offered to pay a large ransom for his family. Later, he offered land west of the Halys river. In a final attempt, he offered to share power as a co-ruler. He even offered 30,000 talents of silver. Alexander rejected every single offer. He insisted there could only be one king of Asia.

Alexander moved his army toward the Persian lands in the summer of 331 BC. He chose a northern route to reach his goal. This path was smart for his soldiers. It made it easier to find food for the troops. It also helped them avoid the extreme heat of the south. Alexander had to cross the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Crossing the Tigris was a very hard job. Even so, he successfully moved his army forward.

The Persian army was much larger than the Macedonian army. Historians have different ideas about the exact numbers. Some ancient sources give very high numbers for the Persian troops. One estimate for the total Persian force is over 268,000 people. Darius had many different types of soldiers. He used cavalry, archers, and Greek mercenaries. He even used 200 scythed chariots. He also had 15 war elephants to help him fight.

On October 1, 331 BC, the battle finally started. Alexander used clever tactics to win the fight. He used light infantry forces in a very smart way. Even though he was outnumbered, his army emerged victorious. This win was a decisive victory for the League of Corinth. It changed the map of the world forever. It led to the fall of Darius III and his empire. Alexander then entered the great city of Babylon.
