Alexander had much fewer men. But Alexander was a smart leader. He used clever plans to win the fight.

Before the battle, Darius tried to make peace. He sent letters to Alexander. He offered land and money. He even offered to share power. Alexander said no to every offer. He wanted to be the only king of Asia.

Alexander took a northern path to reach the enemy. This path helped his men find food. It also kept them safe from heat. On October 1, the battle began. Alexander won the fight. This victory ended the Persian Empire. It let Alexander take control of the land.
