Alexander the Great led the Hellenic League. Darius III led the Persian Empire. They fought near the Pinarus River in southern Anatolia.

Darius tried to surprise Alexander. He marched his army behind the Greek lines. This move cut off Alexander's food and supplies. Alexander had to march south to meet him.

The land was narrow near the sea. This meant Darius could not use his huge numbers. Most experts think Darius had about 100,000 men. Alexander had about 40,000 men.

The fight was very hard. Alexander led a charge with his cavalry. He aimed his attack directly at Darius. This caused the Persian king to flee.
