The Persians is a very old play.

A man named Aeschylus wrote it. It is the oldest play from ancient Greece that we still have today. It won a big prize in Athens in 472 BC.

The story takes place in a city called Susa. A group of old men and a queen named Atossa wait for news. They are worried about King Xerxes. He led a large army to fight Greece.

A messenger arrives to tell them the news. He says the Persian navy lost a big battle at Salamis.

The play even shows a ghost. The ghost is the former king, Darius. He appears to Atossa. He tells his son that his choices were wrong. He warns him about the future.

People still perform this play. It has been shown in many places. In 1965, an audience in Athens cheered for the actors. In 2020, people watched it live on the internet. It was played in an open-air theatre in Epidaurus. This shows how much people still value this old story.
