Philoctetes is a famous play by the writer Sophocles.

He wrote it a very long time ago. It first won a prize in 409 BC. The story happens during the Trojan War. It follows a man named Philoctetes. He was a master archer with a special bow. This bow once belonged to the hero Heracles.

Philoctetes lived alone on the island of Lemnos. A snake bite had hurt his foot. The wound caused him great pain. Because of this, the Greeks left him behind. Later, the Greeks learned they needed his bow to win. Odysseus and a young man named Neoptolemus went to find him.

Odysseus wanted to use a trick to get the bow. He told Neoptolemus to lie to Philoctetes. Neoptolemus felt bad about this plan. He did not want to be dishonest. In the end, Neoptolemus chose to be kind. He returned the bow to Philoctetes. The play ends when a god appears. The god tells Philoctetes that he will be healed if he goes to war. Philoctetes agrees to go. He later wins glory in the war.
