Women of Trachis is an old play from Greece.

A famous writer named Sophocles wrote it.

Experts think he wrote it between 450 BC and 425 BC.

The story follows a woman named Deianeira.

She is the wife of the hero Heracles.

She worries because Heracles is away for a long time.

She fears for his life because of a prophecy.

Deianeira wants to make sure her husband loves her.

She uses a magic potion to win him back.

She believes the potion is a love charm.

However, the potion is actually a deadly poison.

It was made from the blood of a centaur named Nessus.

Nessus had lied to her before he died.

The poison causes Heracles great pain.

This leads to a very sad end for the family.

Some scholars think the play reflects real wars in Greece.

They see links to the Peloponnesian War.

They also see links to the city of Sparta.

Many people have translated this play into different languages.

These translations help us read the story today.
