The Persians is a very famous play from ancient Greece.

A writer named Aeschylus created this tragedy during the Classical period. It is the oldest piece of ancient Greek drama that we still have today. This play was part of a larger trilogy of stories. It won the first prize at a big festival in Athens called the City Dionysia in 472 BC. A man named Pericles helped support the production as the choregos. People still find this story important because it explores big ideas about power and mistakes.

The story takes place in the city of Susa, which was a capital of the Persian Empire.

It begins with a group of old men and a queen named Atossa. They are waiting for news about King Xerxes and his army. Atossa tells a dream that shows her deep worry. Later, a messenger arrives to tell them about a battle at Salamis. He describes how the Persian navy was defeated by the Greeks. This news is very sad for the people in the city.

A very special part of the play involves a ghost. Queen Atossa asks the group to call for the spirit of her late husband, King Darius. When the ghost of Darius appears, he speaks to his son, Xerxes. Darius explains that Xerxes made a mistake by trying to invade Greece. He specifically mentions a bridge built over the Hellespont. Darius also gives a warning about a future battle at Plataea in 479 BC. This part of the play shows how the characters deal with loss.

Many people have performed this play throughout history. In 1965, an audience in Athens cheered loudly for the actors. In 1993, a director named Peter Sellars put on a version in Los Angeles. This version was meant to respond to the Gulf War. In 2020, the play was shown live on the internet via YouTube. It was performed at the ancient open-air theatre of Epidaurus. This was the first time an ancient tragedy was played in its natural setting.

This old story has influenced many famous writers. A poet named Percy Bysshe Shelley used it as a model for his work in 1821. The famous writer T. S. Eliot even used a similar idea in his poem The Waste Land. Some people think the play is a way to celebrate Greek victory. Others believe it is a kind way to show sympathy for the Persians. Even today, new translations are made in different languages like Irish. This shows that the themes of the play still matter to us.
