Euripides first performed this play in 431 BC at a festival called the City Dionysia. He was competing against other famous writers like Sophocles. That year, Euripides won third prize in the competition. Some people thought this meant the play was not liked. However, the competition was very strong that year. Sophocles actually came in second place. This shows how talented the writers were during that time.

Many different people have different ideas about why Medea acts this way. Some see her as a woman struggling in a world run by men. They view her as a person trying to take charge of her life. Others see her as a dangerous character who is too violent. Some even think she kills her children to protect them from enemies. These different views help people keep talking about the play.
