The play follows a clever and dangerous plan. Electra's brother, Orestes, returns to Mycenae as a grown man. He wants to take back the throne and avenge their father. He brings a friend named Pylades and a loyal tutor. The group decides to use a trick to surprise their enemies. The tutor tells everyone that Orestes has died in a chariot race. He says two men are coming to bring an urn with Orestes' ashes. This lie allows Orestes to get close to his family.

Scholars believe Sophocles wrote this play near the end of his career. They look at his other works to guess the date. Some experts, like Richard Claverhouse Jebb, date it between 420 BC and 414 BC. It has many similarities to his other plays. One is Philoctetes, written around 409 BC. Another is Oedipus at Colonus, written around 406 BC. Even though we do not know the exact date, it is a very old and important work. The story of Orestes' revenge was a popular subject for many Greek writers.

There are many important people in this drama. Electra is the main character who mourns her father. Her sister, Chrysothemis, is different because she wants to stay in their mother's good graces. Orestes is the brother who leads the plan for revenge. The chorus is a group of women from Mycenae. They interact with the characters and provide musical information. The chorus is very important because they help convince Electra to join the plan. This play is unique because it puts so much emphasis on action.

Many different artists have used this story for hundreds of years. The Roman writer Cicero called Electra a masterpiece. It has been turned into many different things. There are operas by composers like Richard Strauss and Mikis Theodorakis. People have even made films based on the story. A modern novelist named Jennifer Saint wrote a book called Electra in 2022. Even today, new versions are being made for the stage. This shows how much people still love the story of Electra.
