She was the daughter of King Agamemnon and Queen Clytemnestra. Her siblings included her brother Orestes and her sisters Iphigenia and Chrysothemis. In some very old stories, such as the Iliad by Homer, she is called Laodice. Electra is a central figure in many Greek myths. Her life is defined by a very difficult family story. This story has been told for thousands of years through many different kinds of art.

The trouble began when King Agamemnon returned home from the Trojan War. He brought a woman named Cassandra with him. Shortly after his arrival, Agamemnon and Cassandra were murdered. The source says Clytemnestra or her lover Aegisthus were responsible. Some stories say Clytemnestra was angry because Agamemnon had sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia. This happened to help the Greeks sail to Troy. Electra was not in Mycenae when these events happened. She was away in Athens during this time.

Years later, Electra returned home along with her brother Orestes.

They wanted to avenge their father's death. Different Greek writers told this part of the story in different ways. In the play by Aeschylus, Electra helps Orestes but feels unsure about the murder. In the plays by Sophocles, Electra is very angry and deeply sad. She is a very strong character who wants revenge. However, Euripides wrote a version where Electra is very smart and leads the plan. In his version, she even sets a trap to catch her mother.

Many famous authors have used Electra as a main character in their work.

Aeschylus wrote the Oresteia trilogy, which includes the play Libation Bearers. Sophocles and Euripides also wrote famous plays about her. Later, writers like Voltaire and Jean-Paul Sartre wrote their own versions. Even in modern times, people like Jennifer Saint have written novels about her life. Her name is even used in psychology to describe the Electra complex. This shows how much her story still matters to people today.

Electra's story connects to many different parts of human culture. You can find her in ancient Greek plays and modern movies.

There are also many operas about her, such as those by Richard Strauss. Some people even named an asteroid after her. Her life explores big ideas like justice and family. These are things that people still think about a lot. Even though the stories are very old, the ideas feel very real. This is why people keep telling her story over and over.
