Oedipus is a famous hero from ancient Greek myths. He was a king of a city called Thebes. His story is often called a tragedy. This means it is a story about great sadness and hard choices. Many Greek writers wrote about him. The most famous versions come from a man named Sophocles. He wrote three plays known as the Theban plays. These include Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone.

The story begins with a dark prediction from an oracle at Delphi. An oracle is a person who shares messages from a god. The oracle said that the son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta would kill his father. To stop this, Laius had the baby's ankles pierced and tied together. He ordered a servant to leave the baby on a mountain.

However, the servant felt pity for the child. He gave the baby to a shepherd from Corinth. This shepherd gave the boy to King Polybus and Queen Merope. They raised him as their own son. Because of his injured feet, the boy was named Oedipus, which means "swollen foot."

As a young man, Oedipus heard the same dark prediction. He did not know he was adopted. He left Corinth to stay far away from his parents. On his way, he met an older man in a place called Daulia. They fought over who could go first on a road. Oedipus killed the man during the fight. He did not know the man was actually his real father, King Laius.

Later, he reached Thebes. A monster called the Sphinx lived there. She asked travelers a riddle about a creature that walks on four legs, then two, then three. Oedipus answered correctly by saying "Man." This victory made him the king of Thebes.

After winning, Oedipus married the widow, Queen Jocasta. He did not know she was his real mother. This fulfilled the rest of the oracle's prediction. Years later, a plague hit the city of Thebes. Oedipus tried to find the cause of the sickness. He learned that the murderer of the old king was himself. This truth brought great suffering to his family. Jocasta took her own life when she realized the truth.

The legend of Oedipus has lived on for a very long time. Ancient poets like Homer and Pindar wrote about him. Even much later, a thinker named Sigmund Freud used the name for his own ideas. The story shows how people thought about fate. Fate is the idea that certain things are meant to happen. It also shows the flaws that all humans have. His children, such as his daughter Antigone, also appear in famous Greek plays. Their stories help us understand how the Greeks viewed the world.
