Sophocles changed how plays worked by adding new tools. Before him, plays often relied heavily on a large group called a chorus. He is credited with adding a third actor to the stage. This allowed for more conflict and better character growth. Aristotle, a famous thinker, even said Sophocles introduced scenery painting to the stage.

These changes made the stories feel more personal. His characters became deeper and more complex than before. This helped the plot move forward in new ways. Because of these ideas, he influenced how drama developed for a long time.

Sophocles was born around 497 or 496 BC. He grew up in a wealthy family in Attica. His father, Sophillus, was a maker of armor.

While he wrote over 120 plays, only seven are complete. These include *Ajax*, *Antigone*, *Women of Trachis*, *Oedipus Rex*, *Electra*, *Philoctetes*, and *Oedipus at Colonus*. Some ancient sources say he wrote as many as 130 plays.

Many of his most famous stories are called the Theban plays. These stories focus on the fate of the city of Thebes. They include *Oedipus Rex*, *Antigone*, and *Oedipus at Colonus*. These plays tell the story of King Oedipus. He did not know that he had killed his father. He also did not know he had married his mother. This family history led to a great curse. His plays show how people deal with fate and difficult choices. Even today, these stories remain powerful and well-known.
