A sphinx is a famous mythical creature.

It usually has the head of a human and the body of a lion. Some versions also include the wings of an eagle. These creatures appear in many different cultures with different meanings. They are often seen as powerful guardians. You might find statues of them guarding the entrances to temples or tombs.

Because they are so old, people have many different ideas about where the name comes from.

In Greek mythology, the sphinx was a very different creature.

This version was often a woman with bird wings. She was known as a dangerous being who lived near the city of Thebes. The sphinx would stop travelers and ask them a difficult riddle. If a person could not solve the riddle, the sphinx would kill them. One famous man named Oedipus eventually solved her riddle. He answered that the creature was a man, who crawls as a baby, walks on two legs, and uses a stick in old age.

Egyptian sphinxes were quite different from the Greek ones.

In Egypt, they were usually shown as men rather than women. They also did not have wings. Many people saw them as kind symbols of strength for a pharaoh. Some statues were even carved directly out of the living rock of the Earth.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most famous example. Most experts believe it was built for Pharaoh Khafre between 2600 and 2500 BC. It sits on the Giza Plateau near the Nile River.

History shows that the sphinx has stayed popular for a very long time.

During the Renaissance, European artists began to use sphinxes in their decorations again. They made new versions that looked like the Egyptian style or the Greek style. Later, in the 18th century, they became common in the gardens of grand palaces. You can still see these beautiful statues in places like Spain or Austria. Artists in the 19th century also used the sphinx in poems and paintings. They often used the creature to represent mystery or the end of an era.

Today, the sphinx is still a very important symbol. In Egypt, the Great Sphinx appears on official documents, coins, and stamps. It connects the modern world to the ancient past. We can still find new sphinxes being discovered by archaeologists. For example, a limestone sphinx was found in 2023 at the Dendera Temple Complex. It was thought to be an image of the Roman emperor Claudius. Whether as a riddle-maker or a silent guardian, the sphinx continues to capture our imagination.
