A sphinx is a legendary creature that appears in the myths of many different cultures.

Most descriptions define it as a being with a human head and a lion's body. Some versions also include the wings of an eagle. While the physical form changes, the sphinx often serves as a powerful guardian. These statues frequently stand at the entrances to sacred temples or royal tombs. The creature represents a bridge between the human and animal worlds. It has remained a major symbol in art and thought for thousands of years.

In Greek mythology, the sphinx is a very different character than in other traditions.

This version is often depicted as a woman with the haunches of a lion and bird wings. The Greek sphinx is portrayed as a treacherous and merciless being. According to myth, she guarded the entrance to the city of Thebes. She would challenge travelers by asking them a difficult riddle. If the traveler failed to answer correctly, she would kill and eat them. This deadly creature is a central figure in the famous drama of Oedipus.

One of the most famous stories involves the riddle of the sphinx.

Late Greek lore says the riddle was: "Which creature has one voice and yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed?" Oedipus eventually solved this puzzle. He answered that the creature was a man. A man crawls on four legs as a baby, walks on two legs as an adult, and uses a walking stick in old age. Some accounts mention a second riddle about two sisters who give birth to one another. The answer to that riddle was day and night. These stories highlight the sphinx as a symbol of mystery and intellectual danger.

Egyptian sphinxes offer a sharp contrast to the Greek tradition.

In Egypt, the sphinx is typically depicted as a man, known as an androsphinx. Unlike the Greek version, Egyptian sphinxes generally do not have wings. They are seen as benevolent representations of strength and ferocity. They often represent a pharaoh, showing his power. Many pharaohs had their heads carved onto guardian statues to show a connection to the solar deity Sekhmet, a lioness. Some sphinxes were even carved from "living rock," which is stone that remains part of the Earth's natural body.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most famous example in the world.

It sits on the Giza Plateau near the Nile River. Most Egyptologists believe the head represents the pharaoh Khafre. They date its construction to between 2600 and 2500 BC. A small group of geologists has suggested a much older date based on water erosion. However, most experts disagree with this theory. The Great Sphinx has become a massive emblem for Egypt. It appears on the nation's official documents, coins, and stamps.

In Thebes, builders created 900 sphinxes with ram heads, called Criosphinxes, to represent the god Amon. At Karnak, these statues are paired with statues of the pharaoh. Other famous examples include a granite sphinx of Queen Hatshepsut and an alabaster sphinx from Memphis. Even in recent times, archaeologists continue to find them. In March 2023, a limestone sphinx was discovered at the Dendera Temple Complex. This statue may represent the Roman emperor Claudius.

The sphinx has experienced several artistic revivals throughout history. During the Renaissance, European decorative art embraced the sphinx. Initially, these images looked like Egyptian versions. Later, they evolved into different forms through various cultural translations. By the 18th century, sphinxes were common in the gardens of grand European palaces. In the 19th century, the Decadent Movement used the sphinx to explore themes of mystery and decline. Writers like Oscar Wilde used the creature in poetry to connect it to social or political changes. Whether as a riddle-maker or a royal guardian, the sphinx remains a powerful icon.
