In Greek mythology, the Gorgons are a trio of monstrous sisters. Their names are Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa.

These beings were famous for their terrifying power. Anyone who looked directly at them would turn to stone. This process is known as petrification. While all three sisters shared this ability, they were not the same. Stheno and Euryale were immortal beings. This means they could not die. Medusa was the only mortal sister. Because she could die, she became the subject of many famous myths. The Gorgons represent a powerful force of nature and terror in ancient stories.

The Gorgons had a complex family history. Most sources, including Hesiod and Apollodorus, call them the daughters of Phorcys and Ceto. Phorcys was a primordial sea-god. Ceto was a sea-monster. They were also the sisters of the Graeae. The Graeae were three women who shared a single eye and tooth. Other traditions offer different origins for the sisters. Hyginus claimed they were offspring of a Gorgon born from Typhon and Echidna. The playwright Euripides suggested they were spawned by Gaia to assist the Giants. These different versions show how many ways ancient people imagined their lineage.

The location of the Gorgons' home was often debated. Hesiod placed them far to the west. They lived near the springs of Oceanus at the edge of night. The Cypria suggests they lived on a rocky island named Sarpedon within Oceanus. Other accounts place them in different parts of the world. Aeschylus described them living on the Gorgonean plains of Cisthene in the far east. Another tradition placed them at Lake Tritonis in western North Africa. Some poets even linked them to the Hyperboreans in the far north. These varied locations helped make the Gorgons feel like a global threat.

The most famous story involves the hero Perseus. He was sent by Polydectes to retrieve Medusa's head. To succeed, Perseus used help from the gods. Hermes and Athena guided him on his journey. He visited the Graeae and stole their eye and tooth to force them to speak. The nymphs provided him with winged sandals for flight and a cap of invisibility from Hades. He also used an adamantine sickle called a harpē. To avoid petrification, Perseus watched Medusa's reflection in a bronze shield. He successfully beheaded her while she slept. From her neck, Pegasus the winged horse and the warrior Chrysaor were born.

After the battle, the Gorgon head became a powerful symbol. Perseus gave the head to the goddess Athena. She placed it in the center of her aegis. The aegis was a protective device or shield. It was so strong that even Zeus's thunderbolt could not pierce it. In Greek art, the aegis is often shown with snake-fringes. The Gorgon head on the shield could strike fear into enemies. Some stories say the aegis was made from the skin of a Gorgon. This connection turned a monster into a tool for divine protection.

The blood of the Gorgons was also highly significant. It was believed to possess dual powers of healing and destruction. Euripides wrote that one drop of blood could nourish life and ward off disease. Another drop was a deadly poison. Apollodorus noted that the blood from the right side could save people. He claimed it could even raise the dead. This blood was used by the healer Asclepius. This duality shows how ancient people viewed powerful, chaotic forces. Such forces could be both life-giving and life-taking.

The name 'Gorgon' itself carries deep meaning. It is related to the Greek word for a fierce or dazzling look. Some scholars link the name to a Sanskrit stem meaning to growl or roar. This connection suggests the Gorgons were defined by a terrifying sound. Many artworks show them with wide, gaping mouths. This was meant to represent a shrill, animal-like howl. This cry was so loud it was heard even on shields. The combination of a terrifying face and a loud roar made the Gorgons truly formidable.
