The griffin is a legendary creature found in the myths of many ancient cultures.

It is a composite being, meaning it is made of parts from different animals. Most descriptions define it as having the body, tail, and back legs of a lion. It also possesses the head and wings of an eagle. On its front legs, it features sharp eagle talons. Because the lion was the king of beasts and the eagle the king of birds, the griffin was viewed as a majestic and powerful creature.

Different cultures held various beliefs about how these creatures lived and acted. In Greek and Roman texts, griffins were often described as guardians of gold and priceless treasures. These stories frequently linked them to gold deposits in Central Asia. Some ancient writers, like Pliny the Elder, stated that griffins had wings and long ears.

However, Apollonius of Tyana offered a different view. He suggested they lacked true bird wings. Instead, he believed they had membranous webbed feet that allowed only short-distance flight. Some later traditions even claimed that griffins kept agate stones in their nests.

Artistic depictions of the griffin vary significantly across history and geography. In Mesopotamia, griffin-like animals appeared on cylinder seals as early as 3000 BC.

The Sumerians often portrayed winged lions or the lion-headed eagle known as Imdugud. In the Akkadian Empire, lions with bird heads were shown pulling chariots for weather gods. These Akkadian lion-griffins were sometimes depicted as shaggy or even fire-belching.

In Egypt, bird-headed hybrids appeared in art before 3000 BC. The oldest known Egyptian example is a relief on the Two Dog Palette from the Early Dynastic Period.

Specific physical details often define how a griffin looks in ancient art. Many Greek bronze figures, called protomes, were used to decorate large cauldrons.

These griffins often had squat faces and short, open beaks. A common feature is a "top-knob" or topknot located between the eyes. Some artists also included "tendrils," which are curled spiral locks of hair or feathers. These curls are a hallmark of Iranian art and can also be seen in Etruscan works. Some researchers believe these decorative features might have originated from the Near East and were later adapted by Greek workshops.

Various names and languages provide insight into how different people understood the creature. In modern Persian, the griffin is called šērdāl, which means "lion-eagle."

Ancient Egyptian names were often descriptive epithets. One name, tštš, meant "Tearer-in-pieces." Another name, sfr, meant "fiery one." In Armenia, the term Paskuč was used to translate the Greek word for griffin. In Middle Persian, the term Baškuč was used in magical texts to describe a griffin or a monster similar to one. These diverse names show that the griffin was a significant figure across many different civilizations.

In the Middle Ages and beyond, the griffin remained a popular symbol. It appeared in many different forms, from heraldry to religious art.

Some scholars suggest that the griffin might have even been inspired by real fossils. For example, some believe that dinosaur skeletons might have contributed to these legends. Regardless of their origin, griffins continue to be a symbol of strength and protection.

Today, the griffin connects us to the shared imagination of the ancient world.

We see them in statues, paintings, and even on modern coats of arms. They represent a time when people used myth to explain the wonders and dangers of the natural world. By studying these creatures, we learn about the art, language, and beliefs of the people who lived thousands of years ago. The griffin remains a powerful example of how humans use stories to bring different parts of nature together into one legendary being.
