He was one of the twelve important Olympians. He was the son of Zeus and Hera. Many Greek people felt mixed emotions about him. Some saw him as a symbol of bravery in battle. Others thought he represented the scary and brutal side of fighting.

Unlike his sister Athena, who used smart plans, Ares focused on physical strength. He was often shown with a helmet, a shield, and a spear. Some thinkers believed his name might have come from a place called Thrace.

People had many different ways of honoring Ares. In some cities in Greece and Asia Minor, they held yearly festivals. Some cities even used him as a protector. In certain places, he was an oracular deity. This means people might seek his answers through special signs.

In parts of Asia Minor, cities held festivals to bind or hold him back. They wanted to keep the spirit of war under control. They did this to help their cities stay peaceful and safe.

There are many stories about Ares in Greek myths. He often appears in stories about his love life and his children. However, he does not have a very large role in most myths. Sometimes, the stories show him being embarrassed or humiliated.

During the Trojan War, Aphrodite helped him choose a side. He fought for the Trojans, but they lost the war. His sister Athena helped the Greeks win instead.

One famous story involves the craftsman god Hephaestus. He discovered that his wife, Aphrodite, was having an affair with Ares. Hephaestus used a net to trap the two lovers together. He then showed them to the other gods to make them laugh.

Another famous place is the Areopagus in Athens. This is a large rock outcrop near the Acropolis. Legend says Ares was once tried by the gods on this rock. The name was later used for a real court in Athens.

The Romans had a god who was very similar to Ares. They called him Mars. For the Romans, Mars held a much more dignified and important place. He was seen as a great protector of the Roman people and their state.

Later on, Roman writers began to blend the stories of Ares and Mars together. Because of this, many people today see them as almost the same figure. This helped shape how we see these gods in art and books today.
