It was written by the playwright Euripides during his final years. He lived in Macedonia at the court of Archelaus I. The play premiered in 405 BC at the Theatre of Dionysus. It was part of a group of plays called a tetralogy. This work won first prize at the City Dionysia festival. Many people consider it a masterpiece of ancient art.

The story follows the god Dionysus and his family. Dionysus is the son of Zeus and a mortal woman named Semele. When Semele was pregnant, she was killed by Zeus's thunderbolts. Zeus saved the baby by sewing him into his own thigh. Later, Dionysus traveled through Asia to find followers. He gathered a group of female worshipers called the Maenads. These women follow him and perform special rituals. Dionysus returns to Thebes to prove he is a god. He wants to honor his mother and his divine roots.

In the play, Dionysus arrives in Thebes wearing a disguise. He looks like a foreign holy man to hide his identity. The king of Thebes is Pentheus, who is Dionysus's cousin. Pentheus does not believe the god is real. He orders the arrest of anyone who worships Dionysus. The god uses his power to drive the people mad. He leads the women to dance on Mount Cithaeron. The women enter a wild state called a frenzy. They hunt and dance in the mountains.

The plot becomes very intense as the madness grows. Dionysus tricks Pentheus into spying on the women. He tells the king to dress like a female Maenad. Pentheus puts on fawn skins and carries a fennel staff. While on the mountain, the women become very violent. They tear apart animals and even attack villages. In a tragic moment, the women mistake Pentheus for a lion. They kill him and tear his body apart. His mother, Agave, carries his head as a trophy. She does not realize it is her son until later.

People have performed this play in many ways for centuries. In 53 BC, a historian named Plutarch told a famous story. He said a head was once used as a prop in a production. Modern directors also find new ways to tell the story. Joe Orton moved the setting to a British holiday camp. Wole Soyinka adapted it for the Royal National Theatre. Swedish director Ingmar Bergman directed it as an opera and a film. These different versions show how the story still matters today.
