Two great leaders met here for the first time. Alexander the Great led the Hellenic League. Darius III led the massive Achaemenid Empire. This fight was a turning point for the Persian Empire. It showed that Alexander's army could defeat the Persian forces. This victory changed how much power the Persians held in the region.

The battle was shaped by smart and risky moves. Alexander had been winning battles in Asia Minor. He wanted to take coastal towns to stop the Persian fleet. Meanwhile, Darius moved his large army into Syria. He took a northern route to surprise Alexander.

This move allowed the Persians to cut off Alexander's supply lines. Alexander had to march south to face him. The fight happened on a narrow coastal plain near the Pinarus River. This narrow land was very important. It meant Darius could not use his huge numbers to surround the Greeks.

Historians have long studied how these armies were set up.

Darius placed his heavy cavalry near the coast. He put Greek mercenaries in his center. Alexander led his famous Companion cavalry on the right flank. He put Parmenion in charge of the left flank. The two sides were very different in size. Many experts think Darius had about 100,000 men. Alexander's army was much smaller, with about 40,000 men.

This size difference made the narrow battlefield a huge advantage for Alexander.

The fighting was very intense and difficult. At first, the Macedonian center struggled to cross the river. They faced strong Greek mercenaries on the other side.

Alexander saw an opening in the Persian line. He led a direct charge against Darius and his bodyguards. This sudden attack caused Darius to flee the field. When the Persian soldiers saw their king leave, they lost hope. The Persian army broke and began to run away. Alexander's cavalry chased them until the light faded.

This victory had many lasting effects. Alexander did not just win a battle; he changed the map.
