It was the largest empire of its time. This empire sat on the Iranian plateau. It stretched from the Balkans in the west to the Indus Valley in the east. Many different places were part of it. These included Anatolia, Cyprus, and Mesopotamia. It also held parts of Central Asia and the Levant. This massive area brought many different people together under one rule.

To run such a big land, the empire used smart systems.

To talk to everyone, they used two official languages. These were Persian and Aramaic. The empire also had a civil service to help manage things. They even had a large, professional army and navy.

Alexander the Great conquered the empire during his military campaign.

After Alexander died in 323 BC, the lands changed hands. Most of the empire went to the Seleucid Empire. Other parts went to the Ptolemaic Kingdom. Later, Iranian leaders took power back from the Seleucids. They started the Parthian Empire nearly one hundred years later. This new group ruled for almost five hundred years. Eventually, the Sasanian Empire took over after them. Many of the Achaemenid ways were used by later empires too.
