Parthia was a famous and important region in northeastern Greater Iran.

Most of this land sits in what is now northeastern Iran. Some parts of the old region are also in southern Turkmenistan. The land had very clear borders that helped define it. To the north, the Kopet Dag mountain range rose up high. To the south, the dry Dasht-e Kavir desert stretched out. In the west, it sat near the land of Media.

Many different groups of people lived in and ruled this area.

History shows that many strong empires fought to control Parthia. First, the Medes conquered the region in the 7th century BC. Later, Cyrus the Great added it to the Achaemenid Empire. After Alexander the Great made his conquests, the Seleucid Empire ruled there.

A governor named Andragoras eventually tried to rule on his own. He even began making his own coins to show his power. Around 247 BC, the political situation changed once again. This allowed a new group to take control of the land.

A group called the Parni people arrived from the east. They chose a leader named Arsaces to guide them. His family started the Arsacid dynasty, which ruled the Parthian Empire.

They ruled from 247 BC until 224 AD. The Arsacids used Parthia as their main base of power. They relied on local noble families to help them rule. These families were given large amounts of land to manage. This helped the empire grow to include most of Greater Iran.

Life in Parthia was full of music and storytelling. The people spoke a language called Parthian.

They did not leave behind many written books from that time. Instead, they had a very strong culture of oral poets. These performers were called gosan. They were like traveling singers or minstrels. They performed for everyone from powerful kings to common people.

Their songs were a part of daily life from birth to death.

Eventually, the Parthian Empire began to grow weak. They faced many wars with the Roman Empire and nomadic tribes.

In 224 AD, the Sasanian Empire finally took over the region. The Sasanians were a group from southwestern Iran. Even though they were new rulers, they respected the old ways. They kept seven Parthian noble families as part of their own government.
