Part of this land is in southern Turkmenistan today. To the north, big mountains called the Kopet Dag rose up. To the south, the dry Dasht-e Kavir desert sat.

Many groups ruled this place over many years. First, the Medes took control. Later, Cyrus the Great added it to his empire. After Alexander the Great, the Seleucid Empire ruled there too.

Soon, a group called the Parni people arrived. They chose a leader named Arsaces. His family, the Arsacids, built a large empire. They ruled from Parthia for a long time.

Life in Parthia had a lot of music. People loved poets who sang songs. These singers were called gosan. They sang for kings and for common people.
