Long ago, Bactria was part of the Achaemenid Empire. This was a large Persian empire. Later, Alexander the Great conquered the area. After he died, his general Seleucus I ruled it. Then, a leader named Diodotus I made Bactria independent. This started the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom.

In this kingdom, Greek and local ways mixed together. People used the Greek alphabet for their own language. Later, the Indo-Greek Kingdom grew in the Indus valley. One famous king was Menander I. He became a follower of Buddhism.

Many different groups ruled Bactria over time. The Parthians and the Kushans took control. Later, the Sasanian kings ruled the area. Even when new groups arrived, the old culture stayed strong. People used gold coins to trade.
