Bactria was a rich land. People there grew crops and traded goods. Bessus was part of the royal Achaemenid family. He was a satrap, which means a local ruler.

In 331 BC, Bessus helped King Darius III fight Alexander the Great. They fought at the Battle of Gaugamela. The Persians lost that fight. Later, Bessus and other leaders arrested Darius III. They killed the king to help themselves escape.

In 330 BC, Bessus called himself King. He took the name Artaxerxes V. He tried to hold the eastern lands. But his empire fell apart. Many of his leaders joined Alexander instead. Bessus fled to a place called Sogdia.
