It sits on the Iranian Plateau and covers many modern lands. This area includes parts of Iran and Afghanistan. It also reaches into Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Some parts of the region touch Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan too. The name Khorasan comes from the Persian language. It means "sunrise" or "the place where the sun arrives from."

This name fits because the land lies in the east.

In the past, the region was often split into four parts. Each part had its own important center city. Nishapur was the center of the western quarter. Marv served as the northern center. Herat was the central city. Balkh was the center of the eastern quarter.

These cities helped organize the large area. Some people also call the region "the eastern land." This is because it was the eastern province of ancient Persia. The boundaries of Khorasan changed many times over the years.

History shows that many different groups ruled this land. The Sasanian Empire first used Khorasan as an official division. This happened around the 6th century. Later, the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates also controlled the area. Many strong dynasties rose and fell here. These included the Ghaznavids, the Seljuqs, and the Timurids.

In 1221, the Mongols arrived in the region. This was a very difficult time for the people living there.

There are many interesting facts about the history of this place. One important leader was Abu Muslim Khorasani. He lived between the years 747 and 750. He helped the Abbasids come to power. The region also had many famous cities. For example, Herat was known as the "Pearl of Khorasan." Some historians talk about a "Greater Khorasan Civilization" from the Bronze Age. This era lasted from 2400 to 1500 BCE. Even earlier sites like Tepe Hissar show people lived here long ago.

Today, the name Khorasan still carries a lot of meaning. It is not used as a political border anymore. However, it is still a very important part of cultural identity. Many Tajiks in Central Asia feel a strong bond to the name. They see it as an important part of their history. Even though the maps have changed, the memory of Khorasan remains. It connects the modern countries of Asia to their ancient past.
