It covers a large area of 96,816 square kilometers. This size is about 5.6% of the total area of Iran. The province sits along the Alborz mountain range. To the south, the land meets the Kavir desert. It shares borders with many other provinces. These include Golestan and Mazandaran to the north. It also touches Tehran and Qom to the west. To the east lies Razavi Khorasan province. To the south, it borders Isfahan and South Khorasan.

The land in Semnan has two very different parts. One part is a high, mountainous region. These mountains provide minerals and places for fun activities. The other part consists of flat plains at the foot of the mountains. The land gets lower as you move from north to south. These plains hold many ancient cities of Iran. One of these was even a capital for the Parthian Empire. Near the border with Golestan, you can find the Abr forest. This is one of the oldest forests in the whole country.

Semnan has a very long and deep history. During the Median and Achaemenid times, it was a huge province. It once matched the borders of the ancient region of Parthia. Later, during the Islamic era, it was known as Gomess or Komesh. In 2014, the government grouped it into Region 1. This was done to help with coordination and development. The province has seen many changes over many centuries. It remains a place where history is easy to find.

Many different groups of people live in this province. People call it the Island of the Tribes. This is because so many ethnic groups live there together. These groups include Kurdish, Turkish, Lor, Arab, Baloch, and Gilak people. There are also special Semnani languages spoken here. In 2019, there were 68,700 native speakers of these languages. Some people call them dialects, but they are a group of Northwestern Iranian languages. Six specific names are used: Semnani, Biyabunaki, Sangsari, Sorkhei, Aftari, and Lasgerdi.

The population of Semnan has grown over the years. In 2006, there were 570,835 people living there. By 2011, the number grew to 631,218 people. The 2016 census showed a population of 702,360 people. Most of these people live in cities. Nearly 80% of the population lives in urban areas. The city of Semnan is the capital. Other large cities include Shahrud and Damghan.
