The land here is very varied. Most of the province is made of sandy desert or dry steppe. However, you can find green oases where plants grow well. Farmers use qanats to water their crops. These are special channels for water that run under the ground. In these green spots, people grow dates and pistachios. They also grow oranges, which some say are the best in Iran.

Kerman has a very long history. In ancient times, it was known as Carmania. It was part of the Achaemenid empire. Later, it was part of the Sasanian Empire. An old text says the city of Sirjan was a main city long ago. In the 13th century, the Qutlugh-Khanids ruled the area. Later, the Mongol Empire and the Timurid empire also held power here.

The province has many tall mountains. These mountains are part of the central mountain ranges of Iran. They create large, flat plains in the region. Some peaks are very high. Mount Hezar is the highest at 4,501 meters above sea level. The Hazaran peak and Kuh-e Shah are also very tall. These mountains stretch from the central plateau toward Baluchestan.

Many things happen in Kerman today. It is a place for learning with many colleges and universities. For example, students go to Kerman University. The province is also important for mining. The Gol Gohar mine is the largest iron mine in all of Iran. Sometimes, the land faces natural disasters like floods or earthquakes. A flood once helped find the ancient city of Jiroft. In 2003, an earthquake hit the famous Arg-e Bam structure.
