It covers about 107,018 square km of land. To the north, it sits near the provinces of Markazi, Qom, and Semnan. The southern borders touch Fars and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad. To the east lies Yazd, while Lurestan is to the west. In the southwest, you will find Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiyari. The landscape is very diverse for a single province. It features high mountains and also wide, dry plains.

The weather here can change quite a bit. Most of the province has a dry and moderate climate. In the winter, a cold day might reach 10.6 °C. During the summer, temperatures can climb as high as 40.6 °C. The average temperature for the whole year is 16.7 °C. However, the city of Isfahan has its own special weather. It enjoys four distinct seasons throughout the year. The highest point in the province is Shahankuh. This mountain stands 4,040 meters tall near Fereydunshahr.

History is found in many corners of this land. Long ago, Isfahan was used as a military base. People built many castles and forts to keep residents safe. Some of these old sites include Atashgah and Sarooyieh. The oldest site is Ghal'eh Sefeed, which dates to prehistoric times. Later, during the 17th and 18th centuries, the province became very wealthy. This happened because it was the capital of Safavid Iran. The city of Sepahan was the seat of the monarchs. Many people also visited Kashan for vacations and leisure.

Many people live and work in Isfahan today. In 2016, the population was about 5,120,850 people. Most people there speak Persian as their first language. You might also hear Luri, Turkic, Georgian, or Armenian. The province is a busy place for many different jobs. It is the largest producer of milk and dairy in Iran. Farmers there also produce nine tons of saffron each year.
