The province's geography is defined by its varied climate and water systems. Most of the area experiences a moderate and dry climate. Average annual temperatures sit at 16.7 °C. However, temperatures can fluctuate significantly between seasons. In winter, a cold day might drop to 10.6 °C. In summer, temperatures can reach as high as 40.6 °C. The Zāyanderud is the most important river in the province. It is 405 km long and has a basin area of 27,100 km2. Most other rivers in the area are small and temporary.

Isfahan's history is rooted in its role as a strategic defense site. Early historians recorded the area as a military base. To protect residents, people built many castles and fortifications. These included sites like Atashgah, Sarooyieh, Tabarok, Kohan Dej, and Gard Dej. Ghal'eh Sefeed is the oldest of these castles. Some grounds at Tamijan date back to prehistoric times. The village of Abyaneh also contains Sasanian ruins and fire temples. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the province reached a peak of prosperity. This was because it served as the capital of Safavid Iran. During this time, Sepahan was the seat of the monarchs. Kashan was used as a place for leisure and vacation.

The demographics of the province show a rich cultural mix. Most residents speak Persian as their first language. However, there are also speakers of Luri, Turkic, Georgian, Biyabanaki, and Armenian. During the Pahlavi era, a large group of Kurds from the Gulbaghi tribe moved here. They settled in Isfahan and cities like Yazd, Kashan, and Nayin. Today, most members of the Gulbaghi tribe are assimilated into the local population. The population has grown steadily over the last two decades. In 2006, the population was 4,499,327 people. By 2016, this number had risen to 5,120,850 people.

Economic activity in Isfahan is varied and productive. The province is the largest producer of milk and dairy in Iran. It also produces nine tons of saffron every year. Modern technology is also a major part of the economy. As of mid-2023, there were 18,000 active fiber optically connected network ports. The province also has a strong military and industrial presence. The Esfahan nuclear fuel research and production center is located here. Additionally, the company Hesa specializes in weaponry and helicopter maintenance. It also works in the field of aerospace.

Education is a central pillar of life in Isfahan. The province hosts many large public universities. These include Isfahan University of Technology and Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. There are also several campuses for the Islamic Azad University. The Islamic Azad University of Najafabad has the largest campus in the Middle East.
