The city sits at a very important meeting point. It is where the main north-south and east-west roads cross. This makes it a central hub for the whole region.

The city grew because of its location and its water. The Zayandehrud River flows through the area.

The city grew even more under the Buyid and Seljuk dynasties. However, the city faced hard times after the Seljuks fell in 1200 CE. A warlord named Timur also attacked the city in 1387. This was a very difficult time for the people living there. The city had to rebuild itself many times over the centuries.

The most famous era for the city was the Safavid era. This lasted from 1501 to 1736. A ruler named Abbas the Great made Isfahan the capital of Iran.
