Ateas was a powerful king of Scythia. He lived a long time ago. Most historians think he took power from other kings. He brought many Scythian tribes together. He ruled a huge land. This land was between the Danube and the Maeotian marshes.

Ateas was a very tough leader. He once wrote to King Philip II of Macedon. He said his people could fight with hunger and thirst. This showed he was proud of his people.

Later, Ateas and Philip had many fights. They disagreed about land and supplies. The final fight happened in 339 BC. The two armies met on a plain. This place is called Dobruja today.

Ateas died in this battle. His army lost the fight. After this, his empire fell apart. The Scythians lost their power for two hundred years. They did not become strong again until the 2nd century BC. The fight was very hard for both sides. Philip was wounded in the battle. Even Philip's horse died in the fight.
