A leader named Atropates started this kingdom. He was a commander for the Achaemenid Empire. The name of the land came from him. Some people also linked the name to a priest named Adorbador. This name meant "guardian of the fire." The kingdom was a very important home for Iranian culture.

This kingdom grew out of big changes in history. In 331 BC, Atropates fought in the Battle of Gaugamela. He fought alongside the Achaemenid ruler Darius III. After Alexander the Great won that war, Atropates showed loyalty to him. Alexander made Atropates the governor of Media. Later, the land was divided into different parts. Atropates made his region an independent kingdom. He did not want to follow the leader Seleucus.

Life in Atropatene was shaped by many strong neighbors. For a long time, the family of Atropates ruled the land. They ruled for several centuries. Sometimes they were independent. Other times they were under the rule of the Parthian Arsacids. In 190 BC, the king Artaxias I of Armenia took some land from them. The Roman Empire also became a threat in the East. A Roman general named Antony attacked the city of Fraaspa in 36 BC. He stayed for a long time but eventually left.

The main city was Ganzak. This name meant "treasury." Ganzak was near a fertile area by Lake Urmia. Many people lived in the lands around this city. The priests there were very important to the culture.

Eventually, the kingdom changed hands again. The Parthian empire began to get weaker. A new group called the Sasanians rose to power. A prince named Ardashir I led the Sasanians. In 226, the people of Atropatene joined him. They helped him defeat Artabanus IV at the Battle of Hormozdgan. The leaders and priests wanted a strong state to keep order. After this, Atropatene became a province. It was ruled by a leader called a marzban.
