Caucasian Albania was an ancient state located in the Caucasus region. Most of its land is in what we now call Azerbaijan.

The name "Caucasian" was added later to tell it apart from Albania in the Balkans. We do not know what the people originally called their own land. Some ancient Greek and Latin names were used by outsiders. Armenian historians used the name Aghuank for the region. They thought the name came from a word meaning sweet or gentle.

This name might have come from a first governor named Arran. He was said to have a very kind personality.

Geography shaped how the people lived in this land. The region sat south of the Greater Caucasus mountains. It was bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east. To the west lay the provinces of Artsakh and Utik.

The Kura River served as a very important boundary. In the past, the land was about 23,000 square kilometers. After the year 387 AD, the territory grew much larger. It reached about 45,000 square kilometers during that time.

The land included both flat plains and high mountains.

Life in the kingdom changed as different leaders took power. In the 1st century BC, the area was divided among several neighbors. By the year 252, the kingdom joined the Sasanian Empire.

The kings of Albania were later replaced by the Arsacid family. In the 5th century AD, a new family called the Mihranids took over. The capital city was originally Qabala.

Later, the capital moved to a city called Partav. King Vache II is said to have built Partav in the mid-5th century.

Many different groups of people lived together in this state. It is possible that as many as 26 different languages were spoken.

Many of these languages are related to modern groups in Dagestan. In the 4th century, the people became Christians. A man named Mesrob Mashtots created a special alphabet for them.

This helped them write their own religious books. This script is mostly lost to us today, but it was very important to their culture.

Over many centuries, the people and the land changed again. Some groups joined with Armenians or Georgians. Other parts of the land were absorbed by Persian culture.

This history helped shape many modern groups of people. This includes Azerbaijanis, Georgians, and people in Dagestan. A small group called the Udi people still lives there today. They believe they are the descendants of the ancient Albanians. Their history shows how many different cultures can meet in one place.
