The Kingdom of Iberia was a very important land in the ancient world. It was located in a place we now call eastern Georgia.

This kingdom sat right between two very strong empires. One was the Roman Empire and the other was the Persian Empire. Because of this, Iberia often had to make hard choices. It could be a free state or it could follow a larger empire. The people living there were called Iberians. They were the main group that would later become the Georgians.

Long ago, different tribes lived in this region. Some of these groups came from the Kura-Araxes culture. One group was called the Moschians. They moved toward the northeast and built many settlements. One of these places was Mtskheta. This city eventually became the capital of the kingdom.

Early stories say a leader named Azo helped settle this area. Other legends say a man named Pharnavaz won a big struggle for power. He became the first king around 302 BC. He built a large fort called Armaztsikhe and a temple for the god Armazi. He also divided the land into smaller parts called saeristavos to help run the country.

Life in Iberia changed a lot because of its neighbors. For a long time, the kings worked closely with the Romans. A ruler named Mithridates I was even called a "friend of the Caesars."

Later, the Sasanian Empire became very strong in Persia. This changed things for the Iberian kings. They sometimes had to pay money to the Persians to keep peace. In 580 AD, the monarchy actually ended for a short time. The Persians sent a governor called a marzpan to rule the land instead. This was a very different way of living for the people.

Religion was another big part of life in Iberia. At first, people followed many different beliefs. They practiced Zoroastrianism and worshiped gods like Armazi. They also followed the cult of Mithras.

This changed in the 4th century. A woman named Saint Nino began teaching about Christianity. King Mirian III listened to her teachings. He made Christianity the official religion of the kingdom around 319 AD. This new faith created a strong link between Iberia and Rome. It changed the art and the culture of the people for a long time.

Even though there were many wars, Iberia left a lasting mark. The kingdom helped form the foundation for the future Kingdom of Georgia. The royal families of Iberia worked with other groups like Colchis. Together, they built the nation that people know today.

We can still see traces of their history in old buildings and treasures. Even the name "Iberia" tells a story. Some think it comes from an old word for "wolf." It is amazing to see how one ancient kingdom helped shape a whole nation.
