Alans

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Alans were a group of nomadic people from the ancient world. They were known for living a life on the move across large grasslands. These people belonged to a group of Iranian-speaking tribes. Many historians believe they were part of the Sarmatian people. They may have even been related to a group called the Massagetae. Over many centuries, they traveled from Central Asia to new lands. Their journey took them through the Caucasus and into Europe.

Life for the Alans was closely tied to their horses. They were famous for having a very strong group of horse riders. These riders were known as cavalry. Alani boys learned how to ride at a very young age. Some Roman writers even said that walking was seen as strange for an Alan man. They used clever tricks during battles to win. One famous trick was a feigned retreat. This meant they would pretend to run away from a fight. This would lure enemies into a trap before the Alans turned to attack.

History shows the Alans moving across many different lands. In the 1st century, they moved west toward the Caspian Sea. They became very powerful in the area near the Black Sea. Around the year 215, a group called the Goths began to move into their territory. This caused the Alans to change their paths. By the year 406, they crossed the Rhine river into Europe. Later, in 409, they moved into the Iberian Peninsula. They even crossed the sea to North Africa to build a kingdom.

The Alans left many records in different parts of the world. Chinese sources from the 2nd century called a similar group the Yancai. Roman sources sometimes called them the Aorsi. In the 1st century, a writer named Josephus wrote about them. A Parthian king named Vologases I also fought against an Alan king named Kuluk. In North Africa, the Alans and Vandals had a kingdom until 534. This was when the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I took control. Another group of Alans stayed in the Caucasus and built a kingdom called Alania.

Even though the ancient Alans moved away, their story continues today. Some Alans stayed in the North Caucasus mountains. They formed a regional power called Alania that lasted until the 13th century. Many scholars believe these people are the ancestors of the modern Ossetians. The Ossetian people still speak a language that comes from the old Alan language. You can still see the influence of this history in the Caucasus today. It is a way to connect the modern world to these ancient travelers.
