Saka

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Saka were a group of nomadic people from long ago. They lived on the Eurasian Steppe and in the Tarim Basin. This was a huge area of grassy land. Most Saka people were nomadic pastoralists. This means they moved often with their herds of animals. They were very skilled at riding horses.

Their way of life helped them move across wide spaces. They belonged to a larger group of cultures known as the Scythian cultures.

Being a nomad meant following the needs of your animals. The Saka spoke languages that were part of the Eastern Iranian branch. They learned many things from the people around them. Their culture was shaped by older groups like the Andronovo and Sintashta. They were also influenced by the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Culture. They even had connections to groups from East Asia.

This mix of influences made their way of life unique.

History tells us that different empires used different names for them. The ancient Persians used the name "Saka" for many northern nomads. The ancient Greeks called these same people "Scythians." The ancient Babylonians used the name "Cimmerians."

Today, scholars use these names to show different locations. We use "Saka" for the tribes in the east. We use "Scythian" for the tribes living in the western steppe.

We know a lot about the Saka from things they left behind. Archaeologists have found many special burial sites called kurgans. One famous find is the "Golden Warrior" from the Issyk kurgan near Almaty.

These treasures show us how they lived and what they valued.

Life for the Saka changed a lot in the 2nd century BC. A group called the Yuezhi moved into the steppe. This forced many Saka people to find new homes. Some moved into the northwest of the Indian subcontinent. In those lands, they became known as the Indo-Scythians.

Other groups moved toward the Parthian Empire or even China. Some settled in places like Khotan and Kashgar. Their long journeys helped spread their culture to many new places.
