Cimmerians

history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Cimmerians were an ancient group of people who lived a long time ago. They were nomads from the eastern Iranic group. This means they moved from place to place rather than staying in one town. They lived on the vast, grassy steppes of Central Asia.

These people were very skilled at riding horses. They were also known for being great warriors. Many historians study them to understand how early people lived on the open plains. Their history helps us see how groups of people move across the world.

Life for the Cimmerians changed because of the weather. In the early part of the first millennium BC, the climate became cooler and drier. This made it hard for farmers to grow food in one spot. Because of this, people became nomadic pastoralists. They had to move their animal herds constantly to find fresh grass.

This way of life required people to be very mobile. They also had to form warrior units to protect their animals. Moving often became the main way they survived in the changing world.

We do not have any written stories from the Cimmerians themselves. Instead, we learn about them from other people. Some information comes from the Neo-Assyrian records from the 8th and 7th centuries BC.

Other details come from Greek and Roman writers who lived much later. We also use archaeology to study the things they left behind. Archaeologists look at pottery, tools, and burial sites in the steppe regions. These clues tell us about their culture and where they traveled.

Scientists have different ideas about what the name "Cimmerian" means. One idea is that it comes from a word meaning "union of clans." Another idea is that it meant a "mobile unit."

The Cimmerians lived in places like the Caspian Steppe and near the Araxes River. They moved from Central Asia into the Pontic-Caspian Steppe.

Their culture was influenced by many different groups. They used special daggers, arrowheads, and horse gear. They even influenced other cultures by introducing things like trousers to Central Europe.

Eventually, the Cimmerians had to leave their homes. A new group of people called the Scythians began to move west. The Scythians were related to the Cimmerians and spoke a similar language.

They moved into the lands that the Cimmerians already lived in. This pressure likely caused the Cimmerians to move into West Asia. Some Cimmerians were even absorbed into the Scythian groups. This shows how one group of people can change the map of the world by moving into new places.
