Most of their homes were in the high mountains of northwestern Iran. They also lived near parts of Mesopotamia. The Medes spoke a language called Median. They were very important in the history of the ancient Near East. Even though they were a major group, they left no written records of their own.

Since the Medes did not write their own history, we must look at other sources. We learn about them from people like the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Greeks. These groups wrote about the Medes in their own records.

Some old stories say the Medes were a powerful empire. These stories say they helped end the Assyrian Empire. However, some modern scholars have different ideas. They think the Medes might have been many smaller groups instead of one big kingdom. We are still learning the truth about how they lived.

Archaeologists find clues about the Medes by digging in the ground. They look for old buildings and tools in places like the "Median triangle."

One famous site is Tepe Nush-i Jan in the Hamadan province. At this site, workers found a central temple and a fort. They also found a large hall with many columns. These buildings show us how the Medes built their homes and religious sites. They lived in settlements that focused on making crafts and raising cattle.

Digging at these sites also reveals beautiful objects from the past. At Tepe Nush-i Jan, researchers found many different types of clay pots. Some were called "common ware" and were light red or cream colors. These pots often had tiny bits of gold or silver inside them. Other vessels were called "grey ware" because they had a smooth, shiny surface.

There were also special pots used for cooking. These objects help us understand the daily work of Median people. They were skilled at making things by hand.

Many things in history connect to the Medes. For example, their style of building halls with columns can be seen in later empires. You can see similar styles in the Achaemenid Empire at places like Persepolis.

The Medes were also famous for their many horses. Other powerful kingdoms wanted these horses for their armies. This made the Medes a very important part of the ancient world. Their land remained a prized place for many empires that came after them. This includes the Persians and the Seleucids.
