Ancient literature

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Ancient literature is a huge collection of old writings from long ago. It includes many different kinds of work. People wrote religious and scientific documents to share their beliefs and discoveries. They also wrote beautiful poetry, exciting plays, and tall tales. Some writing was for kings, like royal edicts or big declarations. These texts help us understand how people lived and thought.

Writing has changed a lot over thousands of years. Before people wrote things down, they used oral literature. This means they told stories out loud to one another. Sadly, many of those spoken stories did not survive. To keep their words, people used many different materials. They carved into stone or wrote on clay tablets. They also used papyrus, palm leaves, and even metal.

History shows us when these different writings began. The earliest written literature started around 2600 BC with Sumerian texts. These include things like the Instructions of Shuruppak. In Egypt, the Book of the Dead is very famous. One version was recorded on the Papyrus of Ani around 1240 BC. Other versions might be even older, from the 18th century BC. Many other works have been lost to the ravages of time.

There are many important names and dates to remember. The Epic of Gilgamesh is a very old Sumerian story. It has versions from as early as 2250 BC. In the Middle Bronze Age, people wrote the Laws of Eshnunna. Later, the Code of Hammurabi was written on a stone stele in 1754 BC. Ancient China also has the Classic of Poetry from about 1000 BC. These names show how much people loved to record their worlds.

Ancient literature connects to many things we know today. You might know stories like Aesop's Fables from Greece. You might even know the Trojan War from the Iliad. Many people still study the works of thinkers like Aristotle or Plato. These writers explored math, science, and how to be a good person. Even the Art of War by Sun Tzu is a very old text. These old words are the roots of our modern stories and ideas.
